Cleaning eyeglasses without scratching

Years later, and a little bit of an update. When I first wrote this over a decade ago, one thing led to another. Suffice it to say, for a number of years after writing this, I ran the largest online glasses review site on the web.

The short version when it comes to avoiding scratches on your glasses is that if your glasses have an anti reflective coating, a little mild dish soap and warm water (not hot water) is by far the best way.

To give an example of what happens if you use hot water:

Uh oh - lenses from glasses exposed to hot water

The coating on the lenses above cracked with hot water. So use warm water. Not hot.

The biggest issue you might run into with water is that if you have nosepads that are screwed in to the frame, depending on the metal you can get some green corrosion developing around the nosepads.

The process I have used for years is to put a couple drops of dish soap on the lenses, run them under the tap, and then use my fingers to spread the soap and clean them. Anti reflective coatings tend to repel water, so as long as the flow from the tap is smooth, I’m usually left without any drops on the lenses afterwards.

If water isn’t your thing, the remainder of the items I mentioned years ago hold true and are still below.

Last night, just before I went to bed at 5am, I had a little brainstorming session trying to decide what my first real article would be. My first thought was about how to clean glasses since I had just done a lot of research. I became interested in this sort of thing when I ordered my first pair of glasses from 39DollarGlasses .

Those who know me know that I really like to “delve into the details” when I start researching even the most simple thing, so I thought I’d put my knowledge to good use and share what I’ve learned. I’ll post a link when it’s up, but here are some of the basic points I listed at the end which sum up the article quite well:

  • Never clean glasses without having them wet.
  • Use only water and cleaners made specifically for eyeglasses.
  • If you must rub, only use a micro-fiber cloth.
  • Buy glasses that have scratch-resistance and (preferably) water-repellance.
  • The best way to clean is with warm water, mild dish soap, and your finger tips, letting the lenses drip dry, or using a clean micro-fiber cloth to rub them.

The article contains more, such as why kleenex and windex are both bad ideas, but rather than ramble twice within an hour, I’ll let you all read the article when I get it posted.

Update: The full fledged article is up at https:/free-info-pages.com/how-to-clean-your-glasses-without-leaving-scratches.htm
