Printer review – Windows XP and OS X 10.4.7 – Epson Stylus Photo R220

September 28th, 2006

I wanted the following in a printer:

  • Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X support
  • Print-to-CD ability
  • Low cost ink cartridge replacements
  • Low printer cost (less than $100)

That was really about it. Read more…

Hackintosh Fix – Mac OS X freezes when trying to shut down, restart or sleep.

September 28th, 2006

One of the issues that plagued me during my “Mac OS X on a regular white box PC” experiment was how the computer refused to shut down, restart, or go into sleep mode. Recently, OS X 10.4.7 has become available (I had previously used 10.4.6), and I thought I’d give it a try again. The shut down bug remained, but after looking through the osx86project.org forums, I finally found a fix. Read more…

USB hub review – the i-rocks CRYSTAL IR-4300 4-port USB 2.0 powered hub

September 25th, 2006

I needed to connect 3 printers to a computer that was about 20-25 feet away (depending on which printer you looked at). Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough USB extension cables, and since the maximum cable length is around 5 meters (or about 16.4 feet) anyway, I decided to look for a cheap powered USB hub.
I headed to a Computer Boulevarde store and picked up an i-rocks IR-4300 for about $20 CDN. In the don’t-slice-your-hand-while-cutting-it-open package was Read more…

Vista goes into sleep, and then immediately starts back up.

September 25th, 2006

A small problem I had, with a quick fix. I would put the computer to sleep. It would write everything to the hard drive and get to the point where it was about to shut down, and the screen (along with everything else) would immediately come back up and ask me to log in. The fix…? Read more…

Here’s a fun one… Vista drivers for the Samsung ML-1210 printer (shared over a network)

September 25th, 2006

By fun, I mean not so fun… Here’s the scoop. The ML-1210 was hooked up to a machine running XP. The printer was shared. Frustratingly enough, when trying to add it to a Vista machine via “Add a Network Printer”, it kept spitting out an “insufficient memory to complete this operation” message after trying to install the driver. At first, I thought the machines just needed a restart. After that, I thought maybe the driver was corrupt, after which I tried driver installations, uninstallations, and reinstallations up the ying-yang.

Then, I got angry….

So after playing with things for a good hour or so, here’s the solution I came up with… Read more…

Windows Vista – what driver to use for the 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940) network card

September 25th, 2006

Edit: Hah! As it turns out, Vista ended up finding an update to the driver through Windows Update. It was considered an optional update, but installed the 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940) which has been working fine as well. So if you want the 3Com driver, just install the Marvel one temporarily (so you can get on the net), and run Windows Update to get the 3Com driver.

My ASUS P4P800 happened to come with an onboard LAN which Vista doesn’t supply drivers for. Not only that, but the XP driver listed by ASUS doesn’t show as being Vista Compatible (although I didn’t try to force it). So what to use? Well, quite some time ago when I was playing World of Warcraft, their built-in updater/patcher used to whine about the network card driver not being up-to-date enough. A Blizzard employee did some looking around for another individual, and found that a driver that would work (and keep the blizz downloader happy) was a generic Marvel driver. As a side note, if anyone wants that XP driver (for WoW or another game), leave a comment or send me an email and I’ll be happy to send it to you. (Edit: I’ve put them up on the site. Download for Windows XP/2003 or Windows XP 64-bit.)

Anyway, getting back on topic (Vista), what worked for me was Read more…

b0 error when installing Mac OS X

September 24th, 2006

So you’ve installed Mac OS X, the computer has restarted, and you’re left with the following when the computer tries to boot from the hard drive:

b0 error

What does this mean? Simply that the partition isn’t active. Why the MacOS installer doesn’t automatically set the partition as active (especially when it’s the only partition) puzzles me. Maybe it has something to do with me installing OS X on a PC. Regardless, here is a fix I came across Read more…

How to transfer Firefox settings from Windows to Linux

September 23rd, 2006

I’ll admit it, I spent a good 20 minutes trying to figure this out before finally searching the web enough to find an answer. I already knew where all the firefox information (bookmarks, stored passwords, etc) was stored on the Windows side, but I had a heck of a time figuring out where these were stored on the Linux end. Doing a file search showed that /etc/firefox/profile and /usr/share/firefox/ looked to be close, but it turned out that these were the wrong locations, and replacing those files did absolutely nothing for me. Printers, printers, printers…

September 22nd, 2006

Very recently (due mainly due to finding out that Epson and HP printers are the most well supported within the Linux community), I decided it was time to spring for another printer. Unfortunately, things have changed since I last looked. Printer manufacturers really don’t like the prospect of people filling their own cartridges, and are making things even more difficult than before. For example, there used to be a way to reset  the ink warning on most HP cartridges with a couple pieces of tape. That’s now gone, so if you refill those cartridges, you have to live with the warning. Even Canon has started “chipping” their cartridges. Read more…

How to increase the gas mileage of your car

September 22nd, 2006

Before I get started, this isn’t your typical “make the most of your fuel economy” article for the average person. This is geared more towards the car enthusiast… if you’re the type of person to make changes (mod) your car, this may be helpfull to you.

I’m assuming you’ve already read the typical “make the most of your fuel economy” articles, which have probably given you tips like changing your driving habits (non-aggressive driving, keeping to non-excessive speeds), keeping tire pressures up, changing spark plugs/performing general maintenance/tune-ups, buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle, keeping the air conditioning off, keeping windows up at high speeds, etc. These are all well-known “tips”, and while they do help, I’ve always looked for more. And here’s what I’ve come up with so far. Read more…
